African Savannah Silhouette

Prior to a few years ago, you might be hard pressed to a student tell you what a Savannah looked like. However, you throw out a Lion King or a Madagascar reference and the kids know exactly what you're talking about. Kids channel their inner Zebra, lion or giraffe and bask in the African Sun.

OBJECTIVE/ASSESSMENT

- learn about light source and how it affects the subject matter
- Learn about landscape, silhouette
- learn about water colors and how to use them

​MATERIALS & PROCEDURES
12"x18" white water color paper
Watercolor
pencil
PROCEDURES:
Students are shown different images of African animals. We talk about the intense heat and how it radiates off the ground.
We talk about the landscape and what kind of vegetation grows there.
We talk about how the sun sets and what the sky looks like at sunset.
Students paint a wash of  warm colors dancing in the sky.
Following class period, students draw animals and trees with pencil and depending on their confidence level, either paint with black water color or use sharpie to draw trees and animals.
