Keystone School's First Grade Projects

Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Montague Dawson Ships at Sea

Picture
Picture
Red skies at morning, sailors take warning. Red skies at night, sailors delight.
Today and next class period, the First Graders take a look at different seascape paintings by master painters with clipper ships in honor of the Mayflower. Students pick which weather they'd like to depict and paint sky and sea and imagine what a boat would look like in such waters.

Examples of each master painter's ships at sea

MATERIALS & PROCEDURES
Canvas/18 x 24 white/black paper.
Acrylic blue paint
Acrylic gloss medium
Acrylic gel medium
Acrylic Burnt Umber
Acrylic Burnt Sienna
Paint Brush
Pastels
PROCEDURES:
Students participate in a teacher led discussion about the early settlers of our country and how they arrived in the New World. Students are shown many depictions of the Mayflower and other clipper ships. We discuss the term seascape and how a scene can change depending on the weather. Students choose one or two images to use as visual references and create their own seascape mixing blue and white to make light blue for a clear sky. White with gel medium to make clouds.  Blue for the water, touch of blue green. White for the surf. Students determine how the ship is going to be portrayed. Portrait, straight on. From behind.
